Home-grown Mural Artists

You may have seen our post ‘Chillin’ with an Astronomer’ a few weeks ago.

As a surprise to all of us, some of the boys at DMO decided to try out their painting skills combined with their new-found knowledge in astronomy and paint some amazing murals on the walls of the DM orphanage compound.

Salum drew the sky with the stars as taught to him by the astronomer. And others drew landscape and natural sceneries. They ran out of red paint for flowers and other important colours apart from brown and green. So some of the paintings are waiting completion when the holidays come around next.

Leave us a comment on what you think of our boys’ artwork!

Chillin’ with an Astronomer

On the weekend of 19-20 December 2009, a group of boys from Dar-es-Salaam visited the orphanage. They brought with them a local astronomer who put up at the guest room at the orphanage. The boys had two full nights of star gazing through telescopes. What an experience!

During the day, the astronomer shared tips on kite-flying with the boys.

On Sunday morning (Dec. 20), the boys at DMO had a soccer match against the visiting boys from DMO and the DMO won 3-1. Akber Esmail – one of founders and guardian parent of the orphans – was the referee. The bonding and friendship between the boys was great. The boys from Dar-es-Salaam had previously visited the orphanage to help lay the foundation stone for the orphanage mosque and granary.
